Everytime I read about this (I read Peter Bogdanovick's book 'Killing of Unicorn') and I have her E!THS, it makes me so sad everytime.
My question is: the roomate, Dr. Kirshner, allegedly knew about this Private Investigator that was following around Dorothy & Peter, why didn't he try & help out Dorothy at all?? Isn't that kind of sneaky??? Dr. Kirshner should feel guilty if he infact did know about this P.I. |

Managed to Death: The Murder of Dorothy Stratten
![]() Dorothy Stratten was born into the world as Dorothy Hoogstratten. At the tender young age of 17, Dorothy was spotted in a Vancouver, Canada, Dairy Queen scooping up double servings of ice cream by one primo sleaze bag, Paul Snider. Nine years her elder, Snider took note of the beautiful service girl’s face and figure and believed he could make a fortune off her. He was right. Snider began an intense courtship with Hoogstratten and they soon became a couple. He also convinced her she was perfect Playboy material and that she would become famous if only she would shed her clothes. At first, the inhibited girl-next-door declined; however, Snider, ever the ultimate huckster, convinced her it would be a brilliant move. Hoogstratten eventually acquiesced and Snider snapped away. He shipped the nude photographs to Playboy in Los Angeles, Calif. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner took an immediate liking to young Ms. Hoogstratten. He sent for her two days after seeing her pinups. In no time, Dorothy Hoogstratten, rechristened Dorothy Stratten, became the celebrity du jour around the Playboy Mansion and Hefner's right-hand girl. Snider believed he should be in on the action as well, since it was his bright idea to submit Dorothy's photos to the magazine. Snider introduced himself to everyone as Dorothy's manager. Hefner despised the loathsome, oily character and let young Dorothy know how he felt about her boyfriend. Hefner did everything he could to capitalize on the beautiful young woman with her innocent looks and sinful body. He made Dorothy the "October 1979 Playmate." She was eventually picked as the "Playmate of the Year" and later pushed for the "Playmate of the Quarter-Century." She was on top of the T&A heap in no time. Paul Snider, on the other hand, was left behind. As Dorothy's star shone brighter, Hefner began to introduce her to the upper echelons of Hollywood society. One of the key figures in Dorothy's life, film director Peter Bogdanovich, met Dorothy at a party at the Playboy Mansion thrown by Hefner. Bogdanovich, a famous and lauded director of such films as Paper Moon, What’s Up, Doc? and The Last Picture Show, had recently ended a relationship with another young blond model/aspiring actress named Cybill Shepherd. Stratten and Bogdanovich hit it off in a big way. He was eager to help her break into films with a serious acting role. Stratten had recently played a small role as a sexy robot in the low-budget sci-fi flick Galaxina. The role was not a huge stretch for her. Bogdanovich, however, wanted the world to see that his new girlfriend was more than just a pretty face with an amazing body. As Dorothy found comfort in the arms of another man, Paul Snider was losing his mind with jealousy. He believed he was responsible for her success. He also knew that he was being ignored. Indeed, Dorothy was ready to get away from Snider — everyone kept telling her to escape his clutches. However, there was one major obstacle that prevented her from doing so – to get Snider off her back, she had relented and agreed to marry him, believing he would simply go away. She was mortified because she had fallen for Bogdanovich and was not sure how to break the bad news to her husband. On Aug. 14, 1980, Dorothy decided to meet Snider one last time, so she could sever their relationship for good. They met at Paul's apartment in West Los Angeles, where the couple had once lived together. Dorothy flew in from New York, where she was in the middle of filming They All Laughed, directed by her lover, Peter Bogdanovich. One day after Stratten's arrival, Paul Snider's apartment mates had not heard a word from either one. One of the neighbors decided to peek in on the couple and entered Snider's apartment. To the neighbor's horror, lying facedown on the bed was the body of Dorothy Stratten. She was nude and covered in blood, including two bloody handprints on her buttocks. Her left pinkie finger was missing, as was her entire face. Lying next to her on the floor was what was left of Paul Snider. The naked man had a gaping hole directly between where his eyes had been, with his left eye dangling from its socket. Both were covered in ants. A strange apparatus lay on the ground next to Dorothy Stratten's mutilated body. The coroner's office surmised that it was some kind of "love contraption" or sex bench. It was later learned that Snider had designed and developed the contraption as a workout bench/sex toy. Apparently, he wanted to market his invention to the porn industry. Though not confirmed by the coroner's office, there was speculation that Snider murdered Stratten, strapped her bloody corpse to the sex bench, and then proceeded to have sex with her dead body for at least 30 minutes. Once he was done with her, he blew out his own brains. Dorothy Stratten was dead at the age of 20. Peter Bogdanovich got over his grief and married Dorothy's younger sister, Louise. They separated in 2001. There have been two movies about the tragic life and death of Dorothy Stratten: Death of A Centerfold, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis as Stratten, and Star 80, which starred Mariel Hemingway as Stratten and Eric Roberts as Snider. The latter film’s climatic murder scene was shot in the actual apartment where the real murder/suicide took place. http://investigation.discovery.com/i...-stratten.html |

Peter is the source of this statement.....In his book he eludes to the fact that she had missed her period and he thought she may have been pregnant...but when Dorothy was found she had a maxi pad in her underwear and Peter says he felt that she wore the pad to convince Paul she was on her period so she wouldn't have to have sex w/ Paul.... However u must take what Peter says w/ a grain of salt Peter lost his freaking mind when Dorothy was killed he blamed EVERYONE and I sure his self included....he waged a one man war to bring Heffner down.....He said heffner exploited Dorothy and mistreated her...He said that Dorothy despised being a nude model and she only did it to appease Paul and blah,,blah,,blah...... In the beginning of her playboy career she didn't like it but I think as time went on she found that there were actual benefits such as her acting for being a Bunny and a centerfold......Everyone says she was as shy as a church mouse but she said herself that she was getting over her shyness very quickly......I think Peter is the one who really didn't like it...Louise Dorothy's sister said that Peter was a very jealous man and I find it hard to believe that he would support her being constantly looked at like she was a rack of lamb |

Dorothy Stratten was one of the most beautiful women in the world.
I didn't know she was only 20 years old when she died. That is so sad. |

I think if he did know, he was trying to stay out of their marital problems. I am not sure if they were super close. I am guessing as well that he didn't realize how truly sick Paul was or that he was capable of doing what he did to Dorothy. I think I read that he and his girlfriend thought Dorothy and Paul were reconciling downstairs when really they were both dead. I am sure he probably did feel extremely guilty. |

I don't know if Stratten was pregnant or not. Does it really matter? Snyder was going to kill her no matter what. Her huge mistake was to meet him at a place of his choosing alone. She should have met him at her attorney's office with a bodyguard or 3. Shows you the difference between then and now.
I always found Hefner's bleating and his 'heart' attack just a little too much too late. And Bogdanovich marrying the younger sister just creepy. |

Ah, maybe because somebody else asked the question and I replied. Why would it have mattered to Snyder if she were pregnant or not? Since I doubt he'd had sex with her for quite a while, if she'd said that he'd probably have come to the conclusion that it wasn't his. He had his home made bondage chair ready and waiting. He'd bought a shotgun and ammo and they were ready and waiting. Stratten was his creation - and she was walking away from him. Her death was the only way he had left to control her. She was dead no matter what happened. She should have met him at the lawyers. |

Absolutely. Dorothy was the pawn in Snyder, Hefner and Bogdanovich's games and she paid with her life. I guess you tend to forget just how young she really was -20 isn't old enough to really know who or what you want from life.
She might have gone on to bigger things - who knows. |

Good observation Noah! Dorothy was so young and beautiful and these men wanted her so badly (one for ownership, the other with dollar signs in this eyes, and the last because he had to have her.) Not one of these men were thinking of Dorothy's happiness or well being. Due to these 3 clowns her life become a dangerous situation and she lost. |
