The Elephant In The Room

Something about this case has bothered me from Day One, and I wonder if I'm wrong.

This young girl was kidnapped by someone her father hired and who was known to the family. From what I understand, Ed Smart liked to hire disadvantaged people from the community to do work around his house.

Am I the only one who thinks that the father was a little bit culpable for letting riff-raff men into his home, when he had attractive young children?

I realize there was no way to foresee this happening, but Mr. Smart may have been a bit foolish, carrying his charitable ideals too far.
