Family of missing Hawthorne nurse seeks help
The family of a missing Hawthorne mother is asking Churchill County residents to help in a search of the Mineral County area planned for Saturday and Sunday.

Anyone with ATVs, horses, search and rescue dogs and four-wheel drive vehicles is asked to help look for Nita Mayo, a Hawthorne nurse who disappeared in August.

Search teams will meet at El Capitan Restaurant/Casino in Hawthorne at 9 a.m.

Mayo, 64, left home Aug. 8 and planned to take a day trip over Sonora Pass in California. Her family believes Mayo would stop to shop in small towns along the way.

She never made it home.

Her car was found at the Donnell Vista Overlook on Highway 108, which is about 12 miles east of Strawberry, Calif. The location is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Hawthorne.

The keys were inside the vehicle, along with Mayo's purse, wallet and cell phone. Her camera was missing, and she was wearing her prescription sunglasses. Mayo's family said their mother could have entered her locked car by using a keypad.

A search of the Sierra Mountains last month where the car was found did not turn up any clues.

America's Most Wanted spent two days filming the search and plans to air a segment on Mayo's disappearance in mid-December, her family said.

The case has now been assigned to the FBI and classified as "a missing person with suspicious circumstances."

Tracy Mayo, the daughter of the missing woman, said in a prepared statement that the family thinks it is important to begin searching the area where Mayo was last seen, which was at home in Hawthorne.

"We are especially requesting people with horses, ATVs, dog teams and Jeeps to help us in our search for our mom, Nita Mayo," she states. "We, at this time, would also like to make an appeal to all property owners to please drive around and look at your property for anything suspicious...Please help us in our continued search for our mother and please help us bring her home for the holidays...we are desperate and in urgent need of your support."

Mayo is a nurse at Mt. Grant General Hospital in Hawthorne. She is 5-feet tall and weighs 140 pounds. She has dark brown hair with frosted ends.

She left Hawthorne at 10 a.m. after having breakfast with a friend.

Anyone who wants to assist in the search can contact Tracy at 701-730-4949 or Pete at 775-945-1714.

Default Thank you!

Thank you so much for everything you do! I sure am grateful. I was just on America's Most Wanted forum and this lady was telling me about her mother, Ruth Hoffman who has been missing since June 30th, 1986! I can't even imagine. I just don't understand how so many people go missing everyday and noone can seem to find them. I sure never thought that I would be one to experience it. But there's a reason for everything. Please Lord, bring Mom home! You have a good weekend, I better get busy and finish my e-mailing to the media. Again, I thank you.

I was reading this news article in the Modesto Bee I wonder if there is any connection here with this trio, sound to me they were out on a crime spree.

Sonora trio's arrest a relief to Nebraska town's police
Three cited in gunpoint robbery at I-80 rest stop

Police in Blair, Neb. — a quiet town of 7,700 on the Missouri River — said they "dodged a bullet" when three Sonora men were arrested earlier this month in Wyoming.

Jeffrey Hess, 19, Michael Sullivan, 19, and Jerrald Clark, 20, were arrested Nov. 1 near Laramie. They are accused of robbing a motorist at gunpoint at a rest stop along Interstate 80.

In Blair, 20 miles north of Omaha, the trio is suspected in six car burglaries on or about Halloween weekend, but no violent crimes, police officials said.

"We're fortunate," Lt. Aaron Barrow said Wednesday. "It sounds as though these individuals had some really violent tendencies, and for whatever reason they didn't act on them here."

In the Nov. 1 incident, they are accused of breaking the driver's side window of a man's pickup with an ax, pointing a handgun at him, stealing his wallet, then spraying him with Mace before fleeing, Wyoming sheriff's officials said.

Trio suspected in Jamestown robbery

In California, Tuolumne County sheriff's deputies suspect the trio in a home invasion robbery in Jamestown in late October.

The men may also face charges of possession of stolen property and petty theft in Sonora, police officials there said.

Hess, a former starting quarterback at Sonora High, moved to Blair last fall to play football for the Dana College Vikings. But he struggled with grades and dropped out of school in the spring, said Dana football coach Bill Danenhauer.

Barrow said police had no previous problems with any of the suspects.

"We never contacted them; they weren't stopped for any crimes or any traffic violations," he said. The three men remained in a Wyoming jail Wednesday on $1 million bail, Lt. Mike Garcia said. All three were arraigned last week, he said.

SEARCH FOR WOMAN CONTINUES: Family and friends of a Hawthorne, Nev., nurse missing for four months are planning another weekend search, this time in the Bridgeport area, in Mono County. Nita Mayo, 64, left her home on Aug. 8 for a drive over Sonora Pass and a day of shopping. Her car was found at Donnell Vista Point on Highway 108 in eastern Tuolumne County, with her keys, purse, wallet and cell phone locked inside. Family, friends and volunteers plan to meet at the Walker River Lodge, 100 Main St. in Bridgeport, at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. All are invited to volunteer, and the family asks that anyone with horses, ATVs, dog teams and Jeeps help in the search. "We believe that mom passed through Bridgeport on her way to Sonora Pass, so we would like to have this area searched," Shelley Taylor, one of Mayo's daughters, said in a release. "The best Christmas our family could hope and pray for is to have our mom back home to enjoy it with us."

Fargo woman continues search for missing mother

FARGO, N.D. - A woman here is hoping a segment on "America's Most Wanted" will help find her mother.
Tracy Mayo says she's not giving up the search for her mother, who hasn't been seen since Aug. 8. when she had coffee with a friend near her home in Hawthorne, Nev.

Nita Mayo's cell phone, purse and keys were found locked in her car two days after she disappeared. Mayo, 64, a licensed practical nurse, had left her home for a drive over the Sonora Pass in California and a day of shopping.

The Tuolumne County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the disappearance with the FBI in a supporting role, sheriff's Lt. George Ruckman said. The FBI assigned a victim's advocate to the family, Tracy Mayo said.

The case has been frustrating for search-and-rescue personnel, Ruckman said.

Authorities conducted four official searches of the area where Nita Mayo's car was found, using dogs, helicopters, rope-climbing experts and ATVs. The search-and-rescue boss, a 30-year veteran of the department, even searched the area on his own time, Ruckman said.

Tracy Mayo said family members are hoping her mother's profile on "America's Most Wanted" will generate more leads.

"That's always been my gut feeling is that we need to go national because it's such a resort area," Tracy Mayo said.

The show hopes to air the segment during February sweeps, said Avery Mann, the show's head publicist.

Family clings to hope missing Hawthorne nurse is still alive
FRANK X. MULLEN
RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL
Posted: 12/25/2005

Tracy Mayo, whose mother vanished on a trip from Hawthorne to Sonora, Calif., in August, said she will pretend today isn't Christmas.

"It's terrible, but I'll pretend it's just another day," said Mayo, who lives in Fargo, N.D. "Christmas is a time to enjoy family and be with family, and I can't do that right now."

Tracy Mayo's mother, Nita Mayo, 64, was last seen in Hawthorne the morning of Aug. 8. The 5-foot, 140-pound nurse told friends she was taking a day trip over Sonora Pass to go shopping in small villages along the highway. She never came home.

Her car was found about 2½ hours from her home at the Donnell Vista Overlook on California 108, about 12 miles east of Strawberry, Calif. The keys were locked inside, but relatives said the door also opened with a keypad. The woman's purse, wallet and cell phone were in the car. Also in the vehicle were postcards and a refrigerator magnet from the nearby Strawberry General Store.

The only things missing, family members said, was the woman, her camera and her prescription sunglasses.

Police found no sign of foul play, but several intensive searches of the mountainous terrain near her car revealed no trace of Nita Mayo. Her story is scheduled to be featured on the television program "America's Most Wanted" in early 2006.

Mayo's family still believes the mother of four and grandmother of eight is still alive.

Families still search, hope

200 people march in Vigil of Hope because a loved one is missing

Tracy Mayo's mother has been missing since August, so she wanted to lend support to the foundation that has helped in her family's search.

She was one of about 200 people who marched in downtown Modesto on Saturday as part of the eighth annual Vigil of Hope sponsored by the the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation.

"I think it's shocking to know there are so many families affected by this," Mayo said. "It's just overwhelming."

Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, was the guest speaker at this year's vigil, and he talked about the tough stance he believes is necessary to reduce the number of violent crimes.

"Zero tolerance is a deterrent," Cardoza told the audience at First Baptist Church. "I believe in the 'three-strikes' law and we must preserve it. And I believe in the death penalty in premeditated murder, in the murdering of our officers and in murdering to cover up a sexual crime."

Saturday's venue gave victims' families a chance to get public attention and support for their search for missing loved ones or tips that might lead to those responsible.

This was first time Mayo, 37, attended the vigil, but she plans to make the trip from her North Dakota home each year.

The foundation is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads authorities to her mother, Nita Mayo, of Hawthorne, Nev.

The 65-year-old nurse left her home on Aug. 8 for a drive over Sonora Pass and a day of shopping. Her car was found at Donnell Vista Point on Highway 108 in eastern Tuolumne County, with her keys, purse, wallet and cell phone locked inside.

"The big picture is that my mom is missing and we want her home," Mayo said.

Kim Petersen, the foundation's director, said many attend the vigil for the same reason — to find out what happened to their loved ones.

Many were wearing T-shirts or holding up posters with pictures of those missing or victims of violent crimes as they marched in the vigil.

"These families never give up their fight, and that's why they're here today," Petersen said.

The families also form a lasting kinship with people they meet at the vigil.
"In this room, there are people who truly understand their fear, their pain and their nightmare," Petersen said.

That's not what Francis and Carole Carrington envisioned when they organized the first vigil eight years ago.

The Carringtons wanted the public's help in finding their daughter and granddaughter, who disappeared for five weeks before their bodies were found in Tuolumne County.

"I didn't realize how many people were out there missing," Francis Carrington said.

They established the foundation after their daughter, Carole Sund, granddaughter Julie, and a family friend, Silvina Pelosso of Argentina, were murdered by Cary Stayner in February 1999 while they were vacationing near Yosemite National Park.

"There was nothing we could do to help our family, so the only thing we could do is help other families in need," he said. "And there's more awareness now than there ever was before."

Sharon Rocha, who has written a book about the case of her murdered daughter and mother-to-be Laci Peterson, thanked the Carringtons for their support.

"We all have a common bond," Rocha said to the audience. "This is your safe haven, knowing nobody here is going to judge you."

With the help of the foundation, Petersen said, 29 murder suspects and three kidnapping suspects have been apprehended, and nine missing persons have been found.

Carole Carrington said she hopes those numbers grow.
"We hope that it gets better for you," she said to the audience at the vigil. "You never know when that little clue is going to solve your case, find that murderer or convict someone."

Found teeth draw lawmen

Published: May 23, 2007

By MIKE MORRIS
The Union Democrat

Human teeth found below the Donnell Vista overlook prompted Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office investigators to search the area Tuesday for clues surrounding the disappearance of Nita Mayo.

Mayo, traveling Highway 108 through Tuolumne County, disappeared without a trace in August 2005.

The 64-year-old Nevada woman had left her home for a solo sightseeing trip over Sonora Pass. Two days later, a Tuolumne County sheriff's sergeant looking for the missing woman found her abandoned silver Mercury Sable at the popular overlook off Highway 108.

A man who had found pieces of old teeth while installing a new guardrail at the overlook had contacted the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday morning.
"That's why we're here," Sheriff's Detective Tom Memmer said, referring to Mayo. "We thought maybe she fell over and this is how it ended."

But the teeth could more realistically be from someone sprinkling the ashes of a loved one over the edge, the lawmen said.

Digging through dirt on rocks just below the lookout, Sheriff's Sgt. Matt Zelinsky found more teeth and tooth fillings along with what appeared to be a mortuary identification tag.

The tag said it was from Woodlawn Memorial Park. There is a San Mateo County cemetery of that same name.

"Either this guy was just full of fillings or we have more than one body out here," Zelinsky said as he dug.

Investigators will research who the deceased person on the tag is. If there's not a match using dental records, then investigators will look into a possible Mayo connection.

Forest officials say it's illegal to dump ashes on the forest, but they've heard that it happens from time to time.

"This is one of the nicer spots in the county," Memmer said from the viewing platform. "Instead of just sitting on a mantle collecting dust, maybe someone wanted their ashes to be brought here."

While installing a new guard rail for the overlook last week, Chris Payne said he searched the rocks below for something valuable, like jewelry or a fancy pair of binoculars.

"It's an overlook. Who knows what you'd find," he said. "I thought I'd find something of value. Instead I found some dental pieces."

Payne said he found a molar cap on a rock below and found another tooth piece on the other side of the platform.

"I was, like: these are way too many dental pieces," he said.
A family friend suggested he contact the Sheriff's Office, which he did.
The steep cliffs below Donnell Vista have been searched many times for Mayo.

Her camera was missing from her car along with her prescription sunglasses. Mayo's car keys, purse and a few personal items were still inside her locked car.

Kathy Burnett, with the forest's Summit Ranger District, said Mayo's children are donating money to build a memorial bench at the overlook to honor their mother.
"It would be a real nice one to solve," she said of the mystifying case.

The case is still active and one more search was just done in august.
To this date many things have been found but not one of those items belongs to Nita mayo...

There is new info posted at..

There is still an active effort by family members and volunteers dedicated to finding out what has happened to Nita Mayo.
Individual searchers plan to go back through before winter.

Sad Such a sad case...

It makes my heart ache, even shedding tears over reading this. It seems very strange to me, I don't think Nita Mayo would have intentionally have done anything to herself, which only leaves three other plausible explanations.

Either she was attacked and badly injured, she for some reason just left home that day or she fell over the edge.

I believe the former and latter are more likely although I of course have no evidence either way.

My heart goes out to the Mayo family and I hope and pray that you find your mom alive and well.
