An article about Stacy's mother who vanished years ago:

Like mother, like daughter?

PETERSON CASE | Stacy's troubled mom also married young and vanished

November 26, 2007
BY KARA SPAK Staff Reporter/kspak@suntimes.com

If Stacy Peterson left her family for another man, as her husband, Drew Peterson, claims, is this a case of history repeating itself?

Nine years ago, Stacy's mother, Christie Cales, disappeared, abandoning her family after the accidental deaths of two of her children in less than four years.

Both women suffered from depression. Both women married young, Stacy at 19 with an infant son and Christie at 21 and pregnant.
Both complained of troubled marriages.

But Stacy Peterson's family says that despite any similarities, there's one crucial difference between her and her mother: Stacy Peterson loved being a mother and would never have left her kids -- voluntarily.

Her family fears she's dead. Police have called her husband, a former Bolingbrook cop, a suspect.

Stacy Peterson knew firsthand the turmoil of a fractured family and the pain that comes when a mother leaves the family, according to details revealed in court records.

Illinois Police Look to Public for Sightings of Missing Mom's Car
Sunday, November 25, 2007

Illinois State Police told FOX News on Sunday that "new information" prompted its appeal for more information about possible sightings of the cars that belong to Stacy Peterson or her husband, Drew, around the time that the woman vanished.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the vehicles on Oct. 28 or 29 — the time the 23-year-old Bolingbrook mother's disappearance — to come forward.

Police have released photos of the vehicles: A dark Blue 2005 GMC Yukon Denali belonging to Drew and the second a purple 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, belonging to Stacy, and asked the public to call its tipline at (815) 740-0678 or "America's Most Wanted" at (800) CRIMETV.

Both vehicles were impounded by police on Nov. 1., and are still in police possession because of search warrant seizures.

The appeal came as emergency workers and volunteers searched woods, lakes and ponds this weekend.

The FBI is scheduled to join in the search for Peterson on Monday at the request of state police. Federal investigators are expected to add more searchers and technical assistance during water searches.

Drew Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, welcomed the FBI's involvement in the case, telling FOX that once the FBI starts to question people, he's hopeful this case can start from scratch and refocus on Stacy Peterson as a missing person's case.

"I'm glad the Bureau is coming in. They're (the FBI) is not out to railroad anyone. They're there to get to the bottom of this story."

State Police are already working with investigators from around the state, and have classified the case as a top priority.

Meanwhile, FOX News’ Laura Ingle spoke briefly with Drew Peterson off-camera Sunday in front of his home. When asked about reports that he was seen with another man hauling a large blue barrel to his sport-utility vehicle the day his wife disappeared, Peterson said he has nothing to say about that.

In addition to the missing blue barrel, police are reported to be looking for scuba diving weights missing from Drew's house, which may have led investigators to search numerous ponds. When asked about his missing gear, Peterson told FOX his scuba weights were not missing.

Volunteer searches in Peterson case to be scaled back

Monday, November 26, 2007 12:31 AM CST

CHICAGO -- Family and friends of Stacy Peterson are scaling back on volunteer searches during the week and will resume Saturday, a family spokeswoman said Sunday.

While volunteers will hold off until the weekend, the Illinois State Police will continue searching for the missing 23-year-old during the week, said Pam Bosco, a family friend. The FBI is expected to join the search for the Bolingbrook, Ill., mother of two early this week, opening the possibility of "technical assistance of the U.S. Navy" if needed, officials said Friday.

It's becoming harder to amass large groups of volunteers during the week because of work schedules, Bosco said, and the family would prefer to organize large-scale searches on the weekend, when more volunteers are more likely to turn out, she said.

About 20 people searched Sunday, but they found nothing, she said.

Peterson disappeared Oct. 28.

Bosco said the family will post any search updates to the following Web site: www.findstacypeterson.com.

Here's a better article concerning the Police asking for assistance in possible sigtings of Peterson's cars in the days previous to Stacy's disappearance. It contains photos of the vehicles in question.

Police ask for your help
PETERSON CASE | Cops release photos of Stacy's, Drew's cars

November 25, 2007

Quote:
The Illinois State Police made an appeal to the public Saturday, asking for help solving the Stacy Peterson case.

State Police investigators, who are leading the probe into the 23-year-old Bolingbrook mother's disappearance, are looking for anyone who saw vehicles owned by Stacy Peterson or her husband, Drew, on Oct. 28 or 29 -- when she vanished.

For the first time Saturday, investigators released two photos of Drew Peterson's dark blue, 2005 GMC Yukon Denali and two photos of Stacy Peterson's purple 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. Both vehicles were impounded by police on Nov. 1.

"We are hoping to get those out," said State Police Lt. Scott Compton. If you saw the cars, "we'd like to hear about it," he said.

License plates on photos of the vehicles were blocked out because the State Police "doesn't disseminate that information," said Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez. Police also blocked out details of a sticker on the back of the Denali to help verify whether those who think they saw the car actually saw the right one.

Police asked the public to call its tipline at (815) 740-0678 or "America's Most Wanted" at (800) CRIMETV. The program featured the case Saturday night.

Laura Ingle of FOX News was on the ground in Bolingbrook this weekend. Don't know how long she is staying, but here is the link to her Blog.

Laura sometimes hits paydirt. Here's her post from Sunday.

New Day, new search for Stacy

by Laura Ingle

It’s Sunday afternoon in Bolingbrook, and it just got even colder here.
The sun was out earlier this morning, but now has gone away. The skies are cloudy, it’s windy and the air feels damp. The conditions are not helping volunteer searchers, but they are braving the elements to help find the young missing mother of two.

Yesterday, they picked through the thick brush and tall grass looking for any signs of the 23 year old. Today, a smaller group, mostly immediate family members are looking around Winston Woods, which is where Stacy and Drew Peterson got married.

Another group is heading out this afternoon on this boat to search bodies of water, using side sonar devices.

I took this photo in the morning before the sun went away, while they were gathered inside a neighbors house mapping out their plan, which was kept under wraps.

The Illinois State Police have asked for the public’s help to see if anyone saw Stacy’s purple Pontiac, or Drew’s GMC Denali in the timeline when she was last heard from and reported missing. This is the first time investigators have reached out to the public to ask for this kind of help.

I talked to the ISP a short time ago, and they told me that the reason they are asking about the vehicles now, is because of the information they developed during their investigation. We’ve also been hearing that Drew Peterson’s scuba diving weights are missing from the house, and that investigators reportedly been asking neighbors about the couple’s bedroom furniture, and what may or may not be missing.

I took this picture of the house today to show you where their bedroom is.. I’ve been told it’s the window directly above the garage.

I caught up with Drew Peterson’s brother today as he was out walking his dog. He was CLEARLY annoyed at all of the media outside, and made it known how he felt. He says the kids are being held prisoners inside, they can’t go out and play, they can’t look out the window without being photographed, the generators that fire up early in the morning wake them up, and the lights from our cameras keep them up at night.

I can’t imagine how hard that must be for them especially missing their mom and probably scared to death about what happened to her. It is never our intention to scare children or other family members I told him, but we have a job to do. I hope for everyone’s sake this all ends soon.
