As you read this, one little girl is crying out in pain, one little boy is begging not to be touched "there" anymore. Right now, children are praying for someone to help them when they can't help themselves. And we close our ears and avert our eyes.

Child Abduction Murder Research Project
Overview
In late 1993, the Criminal Division of the Washington State Attorney General's Office undertook a 3-1/2 year research project, partially funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, to study the investigation of child abduction murder cases. This research was undertaken in an effort to determine characteristics of these cases that will help make future law enforcement investigations of this nature more efficient and effective.
During this research project, over 600 child abduction murder cases across the United States were reviewed and the investigating detectives interviewed. Through this case review and the detective interviews, data was gathered that gives insight into what investigative techniques tend to be most productive.
There are some findings that stand out:Due to the landmark finding in this initial research project, the project has been extended for an additional three years to further study these cases. The continued study hopes to be able to more clearly classify killer characteristics in these cases, thus allowing detectives and case managers to better prioritize and focus future investigations.
Copies of the research findings report are available by calling the Washington State Attorney General's Office, Criminal Justice Division, 800-345-2793.
