Precious Doe timeline

Precious Doe Timeline

April 28, 2001: During a search for a missing elderly man, police come across the naked body of a headless girl in the woods near 59th Street and Kensington Avenue. Police have not said how she was killed or whether she was sexually assaulted.

April 30: Police try to identify the girl but have little to go on beyond a crescent-shaped birthmark on the girl's left shoulder. They investigate missing-children cases across the metropolitan area and talk to residents of the area where the girl's body was found. Community activists offer a reward.

May 1: Billy Stegall, a retired Army security officer, combs the woods near where the girl's body was found. He finds a plastic bag wedged between a tire and a rock. The girl's head is inside the bag.

May 2: Police release a computer-generated likeness of the girl, hoping it will prompt someone who knew her to come forward. Leads pour in.

May 11: Homicide detectives express frustration. After pursuing more than 100 leads, they still do not know the girl's identity.

May 12: "America's Most Wanted" features a segment on Precious Doe. The show generates 59 calls.

May 23: After sending the trash bag that held the head to Canadian authorities for special fingerprint testing, police announce the test yields no clues.

Aug. 31: Police unveil a modified image of Precious Doe. They hope the three-dimensional bust will prompt more calls.

Sept. 6: The FBI adds $15,000 to the Precious Doe reward fund, bringing the total to $33,000.

Dec. 8: Hundreds of mourners attend a church funeral for Precious Doe, who is buried in a Kansas City cemetery.

April 28, 2002: In a year, detectives have checked 580 leads and have 231 left to check. The FBI followed leads, even sending an agent to Jamaica. Someone in Kansas City thought a girl in a photograph taken in Jamaica resembled Precious Doe. The agent found that the girl was still alive.

May 1: Kansas City police announce that Precious Doe's palm prints do not match those apparently belonging to Rilya Wilson of Miami. Detectives continue the search for Precious Doe's identity and her killer.

Found in the woods of Kansas City, MO.

Forever Young

Trapped in the glorious years
within the memory of belief, lost of all grief.
Take the reasons,
which once seemed so clear,
but never mind, you have nothing to fear.
For you my friend will be, forever young,
Forever in the heart of memories.

Lost in the glory of all time,
the wisdom was there within that smile,
You see you could have told us,
there within lies the mystery.

So shed a smile, and grin a tear,
For you my friend, will be,
Forever young, Forever young.
Forever in the heart of memory,
We see not through or misery.
Forever young, forever young.
There's a new angel tonight.

CrimeShots © cares about victims. Oftentimes, after a murder is committed, the killer is arrested and all the attention suddenly focuses solely on him/her. The victim is soon forgotten. Most of us know the names of many notorious killers, however, it is quite likely that we could name only a very few of their victims. To forget them is heartbreaking, especially for their families.

It's the action, not the fruit of the action,
that's important. You have to do the right thing.
It may not be in your power, may not be in your time,
that there'll be any fruit.
But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing.
You may never know what results come from your action.
But if you do nothing, there will be no result.
